Hancock Log Cabin

Hand hewn squared logs used in log cabin built in 1884. It has one side window, one front door, one side door, two back windows and a loft. The Hancock Log Cabin was built around 1890 near Silver Creek on the East Side of Tumbleweed Street. Through the years the Hancock family lived in the house as well as renters. During the early 1920s it was used as a school for the 1st and 2nd Grades because the regular school was overflowing. In 1925 Orthello and Ivan Bates moved the house to the corner of 500 East and Maverick and built more rooms around it. The Lyman Bates family lived in it for many years. The additions have been removed from the building and the original log cabin is being moved to the S. E. Corner of Main and Willow, as close to its original location as possible. The logs are intact, the additions have been removed, any material which is inferior will be replaced, but it will be restored as closely as possible to its conditions in 1890. It represents the modest dwellings built in the early part of the II Period of Development in Taylor and has been well preserved because it has been encased in an outer building. The restoration took place in 2001.
